CLEARWATER, FL – September 12, 2013 – FairWarning, Inc., the inventor and world’s leading supplier of patient privacy monitoring solutions, today announced the Privacy Excellence Awards program. The Privacy Excellence Awards program was developed to showcase healthcare leaders around the world who are committed to delivering better care and creating a culture of privacy and compliance through courage, innovation, and dedication. The achievements of healthcare privacy and security teams in enabling better patient care are frequently overlooked and infrequently rewarded.

A webinar introducing the awards program, Healthcare Privacy Heroes: Pathways to Excellence” will be held on September 17th, 2013 at 2pm EDT.   To register, please visit http://www.goo.gl/G2IRjP.

Healthcare Privacy Heroes Exhibit Courage, Innovation, and Dedication

Protecting patient privacy and advancing patients’ trust requires a courageous team, innovative approach, and dedication to protecting patients.  A true champion of privacy excellence possesses an attitude that the work is never finished. The Privacy Excellence Awards will identify, highlight and recognize the hard- earned achievement of leading care providers from the US, Canada and the UK who aggressively protect patient privacy and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to regulatory compliance. Their stories and successes will offer insights and lessons learned for other care providers to leverage in their organizations’ privacy initiatives.

Peer Judging

The Privacy Excellence Award submissions will be reviewed and assessed by an elite panel of hand- selected judges from government, industry and media who demonstrate a commitment to privacy as an ideal. Judges include Charles Rodholm, Information Services Security Officer, David Sheidlower, Chief Information Security Officer at Health Quest, and John Pritchard, IT Security Manager at St. Charles Health System.  Additional judges will be announced in the coming weeks.

In 2014, six care providers from the US, Canada and UK will be awarded with the high honor of a Privacy Excellence Award. The highest scoring organization worldwide will receive an Overall Achievement Award. Additionally, an award for Visionary of the Year will be bestowed upon an organization that exemplifies how an imaginative and enterprising spirit and custom privacy program results in a strong culture of patient privacy.

How Privacy Impacts Care

Privacy is essential to providing the best possible patient care, and recent analysis of The Health Information National Trends Survey results reinforced the idea that privacy and security protections result in better care. The article, “Concern about security and privacy, and perceived control over collection and use of health information are related to withholding of health information from healthcare providers,” reveals that patients regularly withhold information from their care providers due to privacy concerns. This was consistent with previous international surveys conducted by FairWarning®, in which:

  • 1 percent of patients stated they would withhold information from their care provider based on privacy concerns
  • 6 percent stated they have or would postpone seeking care for a sensitive medical condition due to privacy concerns.
  • More than 1 out of 2 patients indicated they would seek care outside of their community due to privacy concerns with 35 percent indicating they would travel more than 50

Ultimately, these statistics confirm that privacy has an impact on direct patient care. Privacy concerns affect how, when and where patients seek care, as well as how much information they are willing to divulge, ultimately impacting outcomes.

“Trust in electronic health records (EHRs) enables care providers to deliver the best care, expand their business, grow their reputation, and create sustainable care. FairWarning® customers are leading the expansion of trust in EHRs, and it is very satisfying to be able to recognize through peer judging the very best of these unsung heroes in the industry,” says Kurt Long, CEO and Founder of FairWarning®.

Award submissions are currently being accepted through December 20, 2013. Final award winners will be announced February 11, 2014.

Winners will be celebrated for a full calendar year with extensive media coverage, a featured role in FairWarning® webinars and industry events across the country. The Privacy Excellence Awards program also offers professional video profile of the winning privacy teams, speaking engagements, the use of electronic signage, and print award emblems for use in perpetuity.

To introduce the Awards program, FairWarning® will host a webinar titled “Healthcare Privacy Heroes: Pathways to Excellence,” on September 17, 2013 at 2:00pm EST, featuring Dena Boggan, HIPAA Officer for St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, Ernest Beattie, Information Governance Programme Manager for NHS Scotland, and Reina Graves, Privacy Officer with Hawai’i Pacific Health in Honolulu, Hawai’i.
